The Danube Cycle Path is particularly well-known in the Wachau region. However, since lesser-known but beautiful cycle paths also start here, there's plenty to discover.
The tour begins in Mautern an der Donau, where you initially cycle along the Danube before turning onto the Traisental Cycle Path. The well-maintained cycle path is mostly flat and follows the Traisen River through green floodplains, past fields, small villages, and orchards. Rest areas right by the water invite you to take short breaks. The peaceful atmosphere away from car traffic is especially pleasant.
The closer you get to St. Pölten, the more vibrant the surroundings become. The state capital offers numerous opportunities for a break or a short stroll. Modern architecture blends seamlessly with historic buildings and cozy cafés. After a brief respite, the return journey begins along the Fladnitz Cycle Path.
This section showcases a different side of the region. While the Traisental Cycle Path is relatively flat, the Fladnitz Cycle Path leads through gently rolling terrain with beautiful views of the Dunkelsteinerwald forest. Small villages, old farmhouses, and quiet side roads characterize this part of the loop. Especially in spring and summer, the blossoming nature provides a stunning backdrop.
Finally, you arrive back in Mautern an der Donau, reflecting on a diverse tour that perfectly combines nature, exercise, and regional culture. The route is suitable for both sporty recreational cyclists and leisure cyclists who want to spend a relaxing day in Lower Austria.
